SERIES 9: The £500 Layout Challenge I Part 4 - TRAILER
Is it possible to build a model railway for £500? The team at Hornby Magazine think you can. Once you have your locos and rolling stock you need somewhere to run them and with a clever track plan, making use of inexpensive materials and kits, along with second hand items, almost anything is possible.
In this brand new series, sponsored by TMC The Model Centre, Mike, Mark & Jonathan rise to the challenge to build a 'OO' gauge layout with maximum operational interest, on a modest budget, proving that over time, anybody can afford to build a model railway.

There is a certain irony to putting a video series about modelling on a tight budget… behind a paywall.
All of our video series is the same. Part 1 is free on RUclips, Part 2 is available with a free account on Key Model World and Parts 3 & 4 are exclusive to premium subscribers. The benefit of being a subscriber is that you get full access to all video series and non-public videos as well as our entire back-catalog of magazines since 2015.
My own layout cost a friend of mine at the model railway club around £250 to build. He played with diesel multiple units until his death and my purchase of the layout.
Excelent ❤
I have ordered two :)
Great video very helpful thanks keep up the good work😊
Looks really epic!
Couple of people complaining about controllers..... in the spirit of this series you should look into DCC EX, you get the same level of control and features plus accesory controls for about £60, so yes, this can be done. MERG is another option.
N gauge one also be nice 😂😂😂
whoever dreamed up that dreadful livery for the running stock must have been high on *****!
I still have my weathered, finely detailed RES, Royal Mail liveried Replica built version. I’m still happy with it. However, these look fantastic. I’ll definitely be looking to get one.
Would love someone to produce a Royal Mail 325
Lovely model. They weren't proper push bull vehicles an additional driver rode in the PCV and had full control of the brake he also had a power selector which consists of 4 settings. This does not actually control the locomotive it displayed the power selection in the loco cab for the other driver to operate the power controller. When propelling maximum speed was 40mph
So its £74 for each coach and an extra decoder to be purchased at possibly £35 ,to operate the lights. Get stuffed Bachmann. I can not stand you anymore. Pure greed.
It would be nice to see Bachmann produce a 64' non-corridor Mk1 Second that could be also used to create 3H 'Hampshire' units and (using the 2 HAP motorcoaches) some BR 4 EPB units......
Its a shame the errors in the Replica body and roof profile appear to persist here. Let me guess, retooling work was mostly on the chassis? Although they ran mostly with the super GUV, you can see in the video just how poorly they line up with what should be an identical profile super BG. I'd have loved this announcement to go with my 90s parcels rakes, but on seeing the product, hard pass.
Where did they say it’s the Replica model retooled? This is a new tooling is it not, unless you know otherwise of course?
@@poppad4972 I've owned the Replica model in the past to know its shortfalls, and have also heavily reworked the original Lima stock to correct well known bogie and chassis issues of their super GUV models to produce a RES rake what feels like 20 years ago, and probably really was that long ago! That body is identical right down to the roof ribs and squashed ellipse of the roof curve. The chassis looks like it is new to take pickups, or heavily retooled, but the body I would stake a months wages on being the old Replica piece.
@@Simon-Davis you must be right then……. Think I’d rather hear what Bachmann have to say about it myself and they call it ‘All New Tooling’ which rather dispels your myth
@@poppad4972 Nothing mythical about it, the EFE model in the video even has exactly the same chassis steps moulded to the underneath of the roller shutter doors instead of being part of the chassis. The doors themselves are unlike those on the Bachmann super BG, which you'd expect to be the same given the real things were and Bachmann have tooled these doors up before. The design choices as well as dimension errors of the Replica model carrying over are too coincidental for it to be a complete new tool. If the EFE model does not have its roots in the Replica PCV, I'll eat my dogs hat.
@@Simon-Davis being RUclips, I look forward to the video of you doing just that 🤣
They do look good, would be nice to have the EWS versions done as well!
I really can't see these models, nice though they may be, having much of a mass appeal due to the very specialised use of the prototypes. Although, as the vast majority of the popular ( and not quite so popular) prototypes have already been produced and re-liveried to death I suppose the manufacturers are having to go down the route of niche models just to keep sales up.
they were common on certain routes, its just a matter of whether or not you model those routes
Is there any news on pricing for these yet?
They told you in the video, but I can’t remember what it was….
@@andymacmac9151yes I’d prematurely paused the video and added this comment, only to press play and it to tell me less than 10 seconds later 😂
@@adamhustwick7740 lol…. Typical!
Bachmann have developed a knack of making models that I won't buy. I would be very interested in a model of the Class 307 that the PCV was converted from, though. Sonic, Rapido and Dapol are getting most of my custom at the moment. I have only one Bachmann pre-order pending.
As a steam era modeller I agree. I don’t stick to my era always (which is era 2/3), but I don’t have tons of modern locos. It’s a pity that it’s been so long since Bachmann have announced a new OO steam loco (I believe the last was the Precedent which was announced in 2020 and released in 2021). If you model era 5, 6, 7 or 8 Bachmann will have been making lots for you though.
Hopefully in time EFE will put them through the shrink ray and make an N gauge version
Fantastic announcement!
It will cost you £148 for them then. Enjoy
Good to see matching rolling stock being announced as it’s been yeaaaaaaaars since they did them.
Although a nice model, it perpetuates the myth that BR Mk 1 coaching stock had cross-member ribs extending through the roof. I thought Bachmann acknowledged this anomaly somewhile ago. But now we have Royal Mail livery storage vans with correctly rendered smooth roofs contrasting with the newly introduced PCVs at each end with roof ribs.
A rerun of the bloaters please
plenty of the first run still available - fill your boots! If your local retailer has sold out, they can order more as they are still in stock at Bachmann HQ. Many thanks
Great announcement, look forward to seeing which models are being produced tomorrow
A LMS push-pull coach would be nice.
Well done Bachmann. I need to get one. 👍
Some GC stuff anything please .
😊
Plase T3.
The detail is amazing on all of these models and the features being incorporated in TT:120 are fantastic. Really looking forward to the release of the pre Tops versions 😁
Hi guys. Useful video as I have undertaken the extended version(both packs). Have to keep rerunning a few snips to get baseboard/etc dimensions . I was wondering if there is a track plan and track number stock list available for the 'as seen' video? cheers.
Nice review. I have 50040, it has enthused me towards the potential of TT
Those toilet windows on the mk2f coaches still grate.....hopefully Hormby will sort the next batches
So, is the class 50 too tall, or are the Mk2 coaches too low? Something looks really off there...
Loco is raised a bit on its bogies so the wheels don't contact the body sides on turns. That's one of the drawbacks of having the correct wider gauge when compared to OO. The only practical solution would be fitting under-scale wheels to the loco.
I have 50040, which is fantastic, but I needed to cut away my backscene at one end a little bit because unlike the 08s and HST, the 50s have a raised vent (or whatever it is) on the roof, which didn't clear the opening. It's a shame Hornby haven't released a mk1 buffet, which is essential for almost any mk2 formation.
Can anyone tell me what rolling stock the Green Class 50 hauled when in service in that livery?
It ran with blue and grey, Network SouthEast and InterCity liveried Mk 2 stock. The air-conditioned Mk 2s from Hornby for TT:120 were seen behind 50007 in this condition.
@@hornbymag thanks
I bought a Sir Edward Elgar class 50 . And it ran for about 5 times round my circuit then stopped and one end only spinning wheels. So i took it back to retailer who replace it and the replacement did the exact same thing. It runs fine then stops and wheel spins. So tomorrow (monday) i’m going to demand my money back. Obviously a factory bad quality control. 😢
Sounds like one of the cardan shafts has popped out. Usually refitting is all it needs and sometimes a slight adjustment of the drive pocket by about .5mm. Obviously disappointing when it happens but a fairly straightforward fix with Hornby or a handy modeller and it won’t happen again.
Going to get one of these beauts
On the OO gauge Great Wakering, how do you prevent buckling in the summer heat and prevent gaps in the winter??
As with the real railway, leaving small expansion gaps between each section of track is the best way to handle this. The gaps don't need to be large, but just enough to prevent buckling as it gets warmer. 😊
Thanks for your reply. Can you direct me to a detailed source of up-to-date practical info? Was considering these (but Kevin Strongs is quite pricey): Garden Railway Basics Kevin Strong £150 The Garden Railway Manual CJ Freezer £20 Getting Started in Garden Railroading Alan Miller £32 Any suggestions much appreciated from a wannabe who had a 5’X3’ 40 years ago!
My nana is named after this engine . It’s why she lived it especially . I own an N scale model layout tho 009 can work on it if they want with ease . Considering there is no fennels to pass under and nothing h is properly stuck down . Tho I may not have any 009 slate trucks right at this moment I do intend on making a converter wagon to have it to couple N scale to 009 . Problem solved with one kind of coupler on each end of the truck . That and it would mean I can get kinda without needing to worry about comparability of the models . Tho I will ither go for the green with the tender or the black with the bunker .
It’ll never be a cheap hobby, I don’t know of many cheap hobbies - except watching paint dry . But once you invest the amount of cost per hour of entertainment is low
No hobby ever really is 'cheap' however it is always possible to have one for a cheaper price, for example buying a second hand camera to get into photography, etc. The fun, enjoyment and entertainment (as you said) is what it's really about in the end. 😊
Only one long crssing and small radius curves available, still not worth buying into, especially with outdated loco's and rolling stock.
We built our layout using flexible track, which is far better that using pre-made curves. As time has passed more and more is being added to the TT:120 range from several manufacturers. The locos and stock are also far from outdated, as they are new designs from Hornby Hobbies.
@@hornbymag What about points ? I don't see manhy steam trains running passenger and goods deliveries these days.
@@GrahamWaltersIf you're into modern stock then that's great, but there are many, many modellers who still love modelling steam.
Dcc sound for 500 quid? the loco alone is is about 200 if not more! this video is misleading!
Read the video description where we say "after you have locos and rolling stock'. This series isn't about powering a layout, it's about building one.
What's a Katina/Catina, or whatever the word was?
I fully support Accurascale donating to charities, best thing you could do, but another DBC Red 66 just isn't for me.
Nice and all but . Why tho I mean sorry but we already have 009 I don’t think we need this now Just make a new model for 009 like perhaps a single farlie engine I don’t think it has been made before . So maybe just make that for 009 and some festiniog rollingstock and maybe a kit building and that would have been fine . Not this tho
More modern image DMU's, please Accurascale. Class 185 TPE!!!!!!
